We just got a new 11 week old Rottweiler. I am not a dog person, and I don’t know too much about training. Any tips would help. A specific question I have is: He likes to lick hands, and once and a while rubs his teeth on them. A little love nip I suppose. Should I stop that completely, or should I train him to keep it nice and not bite hard?? Im thinking if he keeps it nice, it will get him used to having hands in his mouth for when we need to pull out the rocks he chews on and brush his teeth. Advice? |

2its ok for him to love nip, but when someone comes over to your house with a little kid, and a big ol rottweiler “love nips” her, the parents might feel its an aggressive dog and call the pound on you,… experience. So if i were you i would just stop the biting completely. Because rottweilers are know as mean and aggressive, i dont know why, so people think one little nip is an aggressive bite thinking the dog is bad news

3Be very very consistent.
You could let him nip you, since he’s young, but you want to keep it under control.
Since you’re not a dog person, I’d suggest going to be obedience classes at PetSmart or another place. Rottweilers are good dogs but they also need to be socialized and trained properly or they can become out of control.
Good luck!

4I wouldn’t let him nip you at all ! If he were out in a pack of dogs the pack leader would never let him nip. You can get him used to touching his mouth just by playing with his mouth alot and not letting him bite you. Just tell him no and stick to it. If its okay to nip then its okay to bite.

6Sometimes a dog will understand it is being trained if the trainer is wearing training pants.
Seriously though, pups like to play and would use anything to get your attention. When the pup is doing something you don’t want it to do, disrupt his activity by having a small snack for him. Place it far enough away so he doesn’t return to the activity.
In time the pup will ‘grow out of’ the mischief.

7With Rottweiler you must start early training and obedience, because they get so big.
Big means: it’s easier for them to be out of control if you have not obedience trained.
Be consistent.
Take to local obedience classes, if possible.
I advise no hand licking or nipping - at least discourage it.

Here’s a small book that will help a lot!
“What All Good Dogs Should Know”, by Volhardt.
You can find on e-Bay or at the online bookstore, etc.
Do everything it says. This is the easy way to learn and have a well behaved, happy dog.
Recommend: Watch episodes of “The Dog Whisperer” if you can. Usually on National Geographic Channel.

8Well, I can not stress enough that you have to have patience. When your patience runs low or out, remember that the puppy phase will not last forever.
When I got my dog, a rescue dog of about six months old, she loved the nipping thing. What I did was say “no” in a stern voice. I then held her mouth closed with my hand. She tried to nip my hand again and I repeated the process.
Having a ‘home’ for her was also helpful. It really is a safe place for her. I put some of her toys in it and a blanket and/or old clothes of mine that I would wear for a little while or a day. She was comforted by smelling me in her ‘home’. Her home consists of a cage.
When she was new to my home, I kept her in her home at night. This way I knew that she would stay out of trouble. Also when I left my house, she would go to her house. Now that she is about five years old, she goes into her home ocassionally. Very rarely do I now close the door. She has learned the rules and abides by them.
Telling her “no” and “go home” would be helpful for really distracting behaviors. That was her ‘time out’. It wasn’t for long, just enough time for her to know that I was not happy. She would cry. Telling her “no cry” finally sunk in.
It is important to tell your pup ‘no’ right away. Having the pup get familiar with associating the words with the action is fun and challenging at the same time. Just remember, short phrases. Even one or two words at one time will help. Repeating the words. Say “bark” or “speak” when the pup barks. Choose your words carefully. Instead of the word ‘treat’, I chose “snack”.
The chewing of rocks thing might help when you feel comfortable, to bring your pup to a doggie park. This way, the pup will see that rocks are not kewl to chew, but balls are awesome. The best toys for your pup are the puppy line of Kong. That is a very strong rubber. My dog, still to this day will chew up other toys, so I stick to all of her toys being the Kong brand name.
Have fun with him!
Look at this site under new products for the puppy toys.
